Description

The development area is located on land at Ashfield House, Chesterfield Road South, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG19 7BB, which lies approximately 25km to the north of Nottingham and 22km to the south of Worksop. The development area measures approximately 0.63ha and is presently occupied by a car park and buildings associated with the adult learning centre of Vision West College, which is bound by fences on all boundaries. A trial trenching strategy was agreed comprising three trenches, each measuring 30m long by 1.8m wide. Due to utilities and access on site the location of two of the trenches were moved slightly and another trench was abandoned for health and safety concerns due to an unknown utility running throughout the trench at a depth of approximately 0.15m. The evaluation has shown that the site has a negligible archaeological potential, and the proposed development is unlikely to impact upon any remains of interest. Within the development area no archaeology was identified with a sequence comprised entirely of made ground that looks to contain evidence for a demolished building used as a foundation for the present-day carpark. After removing the made ground, the natural deposits underneath was archaeologically sterile. As such, there is unlikely to be any material constraint to the development. No further mitigation work would be recommended in this instance
