Description
Farleys Farm is situated approximately 3km to the west of Tuxford and 15km southeast of Worksop in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire. The survey area originally comprised a rectangular shaped block of land of 3.7 hectares, located 0.5 km to the east of Farleys Farm. The second survey added an extra 2.5 hectares to the initial survey area and a further 0.7 hectares approximately 300m to the southeast.
The geophysical survey consisted of an initial detailed gradiometer survey of Area 1, totalling approximately 3.71 hectares. The survey was undertaken in a series of 30m grids across the site. Two further areas were later surveyed; Area 2, 2.46 hectares, which was undertaken in a series of 20m grids, and Area 3, 0.69 hectares, which was undertaken in a series of 30m grids.
The geophysical survey was carried out using a Bartington Grad601-2 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer with an on-board automatic DL601 data logger. Data collection was undertaken in a zigzag traverse pattern, using a sample interval of 0.25m and a traverse interval of 1m.
The survey identified very little of archaeological interest, with several positive linear features representing former field boundaries seen on historic Ordnance Survey mapping of the site. A large number of parallel linear features in the eastern half of Areas 1 and 2 most likely represent modern land drainage, and it is noted that this does not continue beyond the former field boundary running through the eastern half of Areas 1 and 2. Further possible land drains were recorded in Area 3. There are several other positive linear features which likely represent more land drains, but could represent former field ditches. Linear dipolar features within Areas 1, 2 and 3 all represent buried modern services, likely water pipes.
