Description
The new Babworth Secondary School is located to the east of Retford town centre, on the north side of Babworth road. The site extends north, parallel with main railway line directly to the West. The site covers c. 12ha.
Areas of archaeological potential highlighted in the desk-based assessment and field walking survey were investigated by fieldwork. The mitigation programme comprised of a archaeological watching brief during stripping with sample excavation of any features identified. Two zones were subject to the watching brief. Zone 1 was positioned in order that any features associated with the quern stone could be identified. Zone 2 was positioned in an effort to retrieve evidence of the former Babworth road. The road’s alignment, make up and date were of interest, as were any associated roadside features.
Initial stripping in Zone 2 showed too many features to be recorded under watching brief conditions. The site visit by NCC resulted in the agreement of an excavation programme for part of Zone 2. A number of features were identified for excavation by hand, however three large pits were sectioned by machine due to their size.
In Zone 1, no settlement was found. Very few features were identified and they were probably associated with nineteenth and twentieth century farming activity. Therw was not firm evidence of features earlier than post-medieval in date. The small pits/posthole features recorded during the watching brief were undated and at least one of those was likely to be twentieth century. The three pits with stone and ash fills were also undated and without significant associated features or cultural material, were probably to do with farming practices. Other interpretations of these pits cannot be ruled out; the discovery of a beehive quern during fieldwalking suggested Romano-British activity in the area. No dating evidence was recovered from the pits. Zone 1 did not offer any other suggestion of Romano-British activity.
