Title Final Report on Archaeological Excavations at the New Babworth Secondary School, Babworth Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2006

Abstract/Summary

In July 2005, an archaeological mitigation of land was undertaken at the site of the proposed New Babworth secondary school. This followed on from a desktop assessment carried out in 2003 by highlighted Romano-British and medieval activity in proximity of the site. Furthermore, the nineteenth century former Babworth Road also crossed the development area. A subsequent field walking programme retrieved a beehive quern which was common to Iron Age and Romano-British settlements. The mitigation programme comprised of a archaeological watching brief during stripping with sample excavation of any features identified. Two zones were subject to the watching brief. Zone 1 was a large area centred on the position of the beehive quern. No evidence of settlement was found. Very few features were identified, and they were probably associated with nineteenth and twentieth century farming activity. Zone 2 was positioned in order to identify remains of the former Babworth Road. Limited evidence of the road survived. However, a series of features including very large intercutting pits, and postholes were excavated, representing nineteenth century roadside activity including sand extraction.
