Description

The site comprises a single field situated on the north-eastern edge of the village of Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire. The excavation area measured 0.65ha in total and was positioned in order to further investigate the features excavated infour trenches, which produced a significant amount of pottery, suggesting Romano-British activity in the area. Approximately 0.30m of topsoil was removed by mechanical excavator to expose the natural geology, which was cut by the archaeological features. The geology consisted of a mix of mid-grey, yellow and orangey-brown sand and gravels which overlay a mid-orangey brown clay in the south-western corner of the site. The archaeology exposed consisted of a large rectangular enclosure, defined by ditches, almost fully exposed within the excavation limits. A number of associated ditches ran beyond the edges of the site, presumably part of a wider system of field boundaries and enclosures, some of which were identified during the evaluation, in particular in three trenches. Several phases of sub-division were found within the main enclosure along with a number of discrete features. The features were generally filled with homogenous, mid-grey and brown sandy-silts, though in some cases more complex series of deposits were visible in section. Visibility of features varied across the site but it was generally poor, due to very dry conditions and the low contrast between archaeological fills and the natural. The evidence of a Romano-British enclosure on slightly raised ground in the south-western corner of the site appears, in form, to be typical of rural land division in the region – a large sub-rectangular ditched enclosure with internal features and sub-divisions with some evidence of a contemporary system of ditched field boundaries in the surrounding landscape. The enclosure appears to have been established perhaps as early as the mid-1st century, and probably continued in use into the late 3rd or 4th century AD. The enclosure might have been associated with a settlement in the vicinity, place have been part of a much larger villa within a rural agrarian landscape, as evidenced by a small number of imbrex and flue tiles within the fills of some of the features.
