Title Land at Shireoaks near Worksop, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Evaluation and Excavation

Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological evaluation and excavation was carried out on land at Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire. A total of 22 trenches targeted anomalies found as part of an earlier scheme of geophysical survey. The geophysical survey suggested the anomalies were of low potential and on excavation, most of the anomalies proved to be geological, ephemeral or modern in nature. However, a large focus of Romano-British activity was found to the south-west of the site with possible ditched boundaries also found to the north. An undated but possible circular, feature was excavated with in one trench towards the south-eastern limit of the site. An excavation area was subsequently investigated, focusing on an area of Romano-British activity. A rectangular enclosure, sub-enclosure ditches, gullies and pits were excavated dating from the mid-1st to at least the mid-4th century AD. Ceramic building material and pottery finds suggest the enclosure may be associated with an adjacent settlement, which may have been located on the area of higher ground to the south of the site, that is now occupied by modern residential development.
