Description

The Site is within the Bassetlaw District of Nottinghamshire and aligned northeast to southwest for some 870m along the southeast bank of the River Idle. To the southeast and east is agricultural land, with the northeast bounded by the private grounds of residential properties in the village of Gamston. The Site forms an area of some 10ha and is comprised predominantly of agricultural grassland, with some ponds within the southern part of the Site and smaller enclosed fields along the southeast boundary. Archaeological monitoring was maintained over intrusive groundworks. Mechanical excavation was completed with a toothless ditching bucket under archaeological supervision, with stripping and spoil removal arranged so as to avoid any tracking across the stripped surfaces. No archaeological finds, features or deposits were encountered and the movement of soils and waterlogged ground conditions obscured any remains of post-medieval to 19th century field boundaries or other such agricultural remains of low significance. The undated earthwork banks recorded by the Nottinghamshire HER and noted within the DBA were not impacted by the works and hence no information as to their origin could be gathered. The archaeological monitoring did not record any significant archaeological remains, but did establish the extent and depths of alluvial deposits at the Site. Given the deep alluvial deposits and high-water level it is most likely that these were designed to help regulate flooding of the agricultural land, but the remains might represent a process dating to any point from the medieval periods onwards.
