Description

The Site is located at the edge of the village of Blidworth. It comprises a rectangular parcel of land which covers an area of approximately 2.5 ha. The Site, prior to the proposed development, was used for animal grazing and until recently contained pony paddocks, secured with electrical fencing. A total of 11 trenches with a 30m length and 1.8m width, as well as one trench with 35m by 1.8m were excavated across the Site. The trenching design was informed by the development plan and by the results of the geophysical survey. The layout was generally evenly spaced throughout the field and provided a 3% coverage of the whole Site. Machine excavation was completed with a toothless ditching bucket under archaeological supervision. Stripping and soil removal was arranged to avoid any tracking across the excavated surface. Trenches were excavated to the first archaeological horizon or the natural geological horizon. Stratigraphy was removed in spits no greater than 250mm. The results of the geophysical survey indicated that there was little to no evidence for archaeological remains on Site and this was confirmed by the evidence collected during the archaeological trial trench evaluation. No pre-modern anthropogenic features were identified within the 12 trenches excavated across the Site, with the only features consisting of an animal burrow and a modern machine dug pit/slot.
