Description

The proposed development area is bordered by Rectory Place to the north, and by Manor Road to the east. The archaeological watching brief monitored a process of ground reduction established after the demolition of structures present onsite. The work ceased due to health and safety concerns. It was also noted that the excavations did not reach potential archaeological horizons. Subsequently, the watching brief monitored the excavation of nine test pits within the proposed development area. The first six test pits were located on the NW side ofthe PDA, while the other three were located on the SE side. The watching did not retrieve finds of archaeological significance other than building debris. The results indicate that the region is occupied by building debris associated with the demolition the former Top Yard Farm. One test pit also yielded building debris most likely associated with a rectangular enclosure observed in map editions dating from the 1880s to the 1950s. No other finds/features or deposits were revealed during the monitoring of the test pit. It is worth noting that the dark cinder deposit evidenced across the site might correspond to redeposited material belonging to coal-fired Radcliffe on Soar Power Station.
