Description
The development area is located at land at Threshing Barn East, Church Lane, Lowdham, NG14 7BQ, which lies approximately 16.2km northeast from the city of Nottingham and 22.8km southwest from the town of Newark-on-Trent.
The development area measures approximately 0.13ha and is presently occupied by the existing dwelling and greenfield.
A toothless ditching bucket was used to remove the layers and deposits. The layers were removed in spits of no greater than 150mm in thickness. The process was repeated until the required depth for works was exposed.
The excavations on site revealed some archaeological evidence of post-medieval activity, likely relating to the house’s former use as a threshing barn. Two bricks from each of the three walls and from the floor were retained, with three sherds of post-medieval transfer printed whiteware being identified within the subsoil but was not retained due to the age of pottery and not being present within a set feature.
The bricks retained from three walls and from the floor were handmade, post-medieval bricks likely pre-1850s where the imperial brick was designed and mass-produced.
