Description

The Proposed Development Area lies 2.1km north-east of Junction 28 of the M1 near Sutton-in-Ashfield, about 50m south of the South Fulwood Industrial Estate and 200m east of the Castlewood Business Park. The PDA comprises an irregularly shaped block of land, covering fifteen fields and/or small paddocks, an overall area of approximately 33ha which is bounded by the A38 to the north, Crow Solar Farm to the west, and fields to the south and east. The survey was undertaken using four Bartington Grad601 sensors mounted at 1m intervals (1m traverse interval) onto a rigid frame. The system was programmed to take readings at a frequency of 10Hz (allowing for a 10–15cm sample interval) on roaming traverses (swaths) 4m apart. The survey has identified anomalies consistent with modern activity, particularly across the northern part of the PDA, and agricultural usage of the PDA over the past 140 years as indicated on historic mapping. The most numerous anomalies recorded by the survey are due to agricultural activity, predominantly ridge and furrow cultivation, land drainage and boundary removal. A few anomalies of archaeological potential have also been recorded in the south-western quarter of the PDA. These comprise ditch-like anomalies possibly forming part of a system of pre-medieval field boundaries, identified by a survey undertaken in 2015 in advance of a previous development. Several discrete anomalies have also been recorded which may be associated with the possible field system although this interpretation is tentative. No anomalies of definite archaeological origin have been recorded by the survey.
