Description
The site is land adjacent to No. 31 Burton Road, on the north side of the B686 at the junction with Cavendish Drive. The site was formerly occupied by 25-27 Burton Road, buildings in the southeast corner of the site, which have all been demolished in the last decade. The site comprises approximately 500m² of land which has recently been cleared of naturally seeding vegetation.
The ground investigation works took place on 18th September 2024. The works consisted of machine dug test pits and hand dug window samples.
No artefacts were recovered, and no deposits suitable for environmental sampling were identified.
The archaeological monitoring during the ground investigation works identified no archaeological features or artefacts.
The site has been intensively developed and occupied over the last 150years, with at least two phases of demolition. Based on the layers and levels observed during the monitoring, it appears the southern half of the site has been landscaped to facilitate the later 19th – early 20th century construction of the houses that formerly occupied this part of the plot. The north of the site was probably also levelled to facilitate the construction of buildings here, creating the landscaping terrace. It seems likely that similar to adjacent properties, the properties on the Burton Road street frontage had a storey more than properties to the rear / Cavendish Road; for example the shops / liberal club to the west has two storeys onto Burton Road but a single storey to Cavendish Road.
The most recent phase of demolition appears to be only partially completed, with standing walls observed both in the rubble in the centre of the site and along the eastern edge of the site, closest to No.31 Burton Road. The rubble from the upper storeys has bee collapsed into the lower floors and pushed back from Burton Road.
It seems likely that the 19th – early 20th century construction and probably landscaping of the site has impacted on the upper interface of the mudstone, where archaeological remains are most likely to be encountered.
