Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the ground investigation works on land adjacent to No.31 Burton Road, Carlton. The site is planned for residential redevelopment.
The site lies on the periphery of the historic core of Carlton, established in the early medieval period and remaining a small village associated with neighbouring Gedling throughout the medieval period. The settlement rapidly expanded in the 19th century following the construction of the railway.
The site has been occupied since at least the later 19th century, with historic mapping showing dwellings and outbuildings which have been demolished in at least two major phases of work, the most recent in 2019.
The monitoring identified two phases of rubble across the site, with the partially intact walls of No.25-29 Burton Road identified within the latest rubble layer. Based on levels observed, it seems likely that the early modern construction involved landscaping to terrace the site, impacting on the natural interface and the level where earlier archaeological feature might have been encountered.
