Description

This assessment has included a review of a comprehensive range of available sources, in accordance with key industry guidance, in order to identify known and potential heritage assets located within the Site and its environs which may be affected by the proposals. The significance of the identified known and potential heritage assets has been determined, as far as possible, on the basis of available evidence. The potential effects of the proposals on the significance of identified heritage assets, including any potential physical effects upon buried archaeological remains, and potential non-physical effects resulting from the anticipated changes to the settings of heritage assets, have been assessed. Any effects of the proposals upon the significance of the heritage resource will be a material consideration in the determination of the planning application for the proposal. Known and potential archaeological remains within the Site comprise features associated with a Roman co-axial field system, post-medieval to modern agricultural activity, and World War II military camps. While no designated heritage assets are located within the Site, there remains potential for sub-surface archaeological features dating to these periods to be present. Any intrusive groundworks associated with the proposed development, including excavations for hardstanding, drainage, services, and access tracks, may result in the disturbance or loss of archaeological remains. Such effects would be permanent and irreversible. The BESS is proposed within the north of the Site, with the remainder of the Site remaining undeveloped. While known mapped Roman features do not lie directly beneath the proposed BESS, it is likely that these features continue elsewhere within the Site, including within the development footprint. No groundworks are proposed within the previously occupied areas of the WWII military camps. Consequently, the potential for impact upon these remains is considered low. In accordance with Step 1 of Historic England’s GPA3 guidance, a comprehensive assessment was undertaken to identify heritage assets potentially susceptible to non-physical impacts arising from the proposed development. This process included the review of two Listed Buildings and twelve non-designated heritage assets within the study area, alongside Clumber Park, a Grade I Registered Park and Garden located 2km to the south-west, and other assets in the wider landscape, which had been highlighted in the Conservation Officer’s pre-application response. Through GIS analysis and field survey, it has been determined that, due to intervening topography, vegetation, and built form, the proposed development will not give rise to any changes in the setting that would affect the significance of these assets.
