Abstract/Summary
A Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment was undertaken in respect of land at Worksop, Nottinghamshire. The proposed development comprises a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located within the north of the Site. This Assessment identifies any known and potential heritage constraints to development of the Site.
This assessment has identified that the Site contains potential archaeological remains relating to a Roman co-axial field system, post-medieval to modern agricultural activity, and former World War II military camps. Whilst no designated heritage assets lie within the Site, there is potential for sub-surface archaeological features from these periods to occur.
Cropmarks relating to probable Roman period features are mapped within the Site in the immediate vicinity of the footprint of the BESS by the National Mapping Programme (NMP) and are also visible on historic aerial photographs of the Site. While these mapped features are limited to a short section of a probable ditch within an area proposed for hardstanding, it is likely that further currently unrecorded Roman period remains occur in this part of the Site, but were not mapped due to limitations with the aerial images used by the NMP.
The groundworks for the proposed development do not extend into the areas formerly occupied by the WWII military camps, so the risk of any adverse impact to those remains is considered low. Furthermore, potential remains of post-medieval and modern agriculture are unlikely to be of sufficient significance to comprise heritage assets and pose no constraint.
To consider non-physical impacts, a settings assessment was undertaken in accordance with Historic England’s guidance. This included a review of two Listed Buildings, twelve non-designated heritage assets, and Clumber Park (a Grade I Registered Park and Garden). This assessment confirmed that the development will result in no adverse changes to the setting or significance of these assets. No further assessment was considered necessary.
