Description
The Project Site is located between the villages of Kimberley and Giltbrook in Broxtowe in the county of Nottinghamshire. It is located c.10km NW of the centre of Nottingham. The Project Site is currently used by Kimberley Miner’s Welfare Football Club as a sports ground with associated facilities (e.g. changing rooms, small parking provision). It is located just south of the existing County Council Household Waste Disposal site.
There is no evidence of archaeological activity on the Project Site predating the Post Medieval Period. From the 1860s to the 1930s the Project Site formed part of Digby Colliery and Brickworks and was the site of a large clay extraction pit which extended across the proposed development area.
Due to the location of the extensive clay pit, the Project Site is considered to have no potential to preserve archaeology, predating the 19th century colliery and brickworks.
This clay extraction pit, although important for the local economy has no archaeological significance and is not regarded as a heritage asset.
