Description

The site is located approximately 600m north of the village of Gotham and approximately 1.7km south-west of the village of Clifton. The site covers an area of 2.4ha. Data was gathered for all designated heritage assets within 1km of the application site boundary. This allowed for the identification of the heritage assets where the development could affect the contribution of the heritage asset’s setting to its significance. This study area is proportionate to the scale of the development and was informed by a preliminary appraisal of baseline data. Data has also been gathered for all non-designated heritage assets within the application site boundary and a 1km buffer from the site boundary. The area of search has been designed to be fully inclusive of the application site boundary to ensure that assets adjacent to the site but with the potential to extend into are captured in baseline data. The area of search also allows for assets with archaeological interest within or adjacent to the application site to be placed in context, and for the identification of trends that may help to predict archaeological potential within the application site. The Nottingham HER was consulted as well as Nottingham Archives, and a site visit was conducted. There are no Listed Buildings, Scheduled Monuments, Conservation Areas, Registered Parks and Gardens Registered Battlefields and World Heritage Sites within the 1km area of search. The application site is not assessed to be within the setting of any designated heritage assets. The 1km study area does include one designated heritage asset just beyond the boundary which dates from the prehistoric to Roman period, and eighteen non-designated heritage assets from the prehistoric to post medieval period. There is one recorded non-designated heritage asset within the application site. The date of this feature and its significance is unknown. The baseline data has recorded that the area around the application site has been subject to a number of archaeological investigations in recent years, primarily to the north at Clifton and Fairham Pastures. This work has revealed evidence of human occupation activity from the prehistoric, Roman, medieval, and post medieval periods. The archaeological potential of the application site is assessed to be up to moderate, and any unknown heritage assets with archaeological interest which may survive within the site are likely to be of low (local) to moderate (regional) heritage significance.
