Description

The development Site is an irregularly shaped c.0.5ha parcel of undeveloped land located to the south of Manor Park. The Site is currently characterised by shrubs and woodland, which derive from the pleasure grounds formerly associated with South Manor, a Grade II Listed Building located c.40m northwest of the site. Four trenches were excavated across the site. The first two trenches measured 30m by 1.8m, a third trench measured 24m by 1.8m and a fourth trench measured 10m by 1.8m. The latter two were shortened based on restrictions to the excavation area and the presence of woodland and shrubbery. The archaeological trenching works demonstrated low to no potential for archaeological remains to survive at the Site. The made ground directly above undisturbed natural soil indicated the ground has been cleared in quite recent times. While it would have been desirable to locate some of the trenches closer to the boundary of St Peter’s church yard, the presence of woodland meant that this was not possible. Despite the potential for archaeology related to South Manor’s pleasure gardens or St Peter’s church yard to exist within the SIte, this work has produced no evidence of such and reinforces the results of previous work completed in the vicinity of the Site (Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire 1978, PCA 2007), which also recorded an absence of archaeological features and deposits.
