Abstract/Summary
A trial trench evaluation was undertaken to support planning for a residential development of three houses at Manor Park, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. The work took place in August 2025.
The evaluation followed other archaeological investigations in the vicinity of the site, in 1978 and 2007. Four trenches were excavated in the 2025 evaluation, each measuring 30m by 1.8m, two of which were adjusted to shorter lengths of 24m by 1.8m and 10m by 1.8m, due to constraints presented by adjacent woodland. No archaeological features or deposits were present in any of the current trial trenches.
The deposit sequence within all the trenches comprised natural substrate of sandstone mixed with red clay overlain by mixed deposits of made ground. There was no evidence of subsoil, and the made ground was directly below loose, brownish grey topsoil at all points across the Site. Only one other deposit was noted, that being compacted brick rubble near the north end of one trench. It was established that this constituted hard surfacing for an entranceway into the site.
