Description

The site lies on the southern edge of the village, on Church Road which extends southwards towards Swinethorpe. Holly House lies on the west side of the road, just south of the Church of All Saints. It is a roughly rectangular plot of around 950m² with planned access directly from Church Road. To investigate the potential for archaeological remains two trenches, one measuring 15m x 2m and one measuring 10m x 2m were excavated. Trenches were opened under archaeological supervision using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless blade, to the first archaeologically significant horizon, or the natural substrate, whichever was encountered first. The evaluation revealed a limited level of archaeological activity within the development area. The first trench contained two features: a shallow ditch and a small pit. It is probable that only the base of the original ditch was preserved, the upper portions having been truncated by later activity. The ditch may have served as a minor boundary or drainage feature. A total of three sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered from the fill of the ditch, indicating activity of this period in the vicinity. In contrast, the small circular pit is likely to be modern in date, as evidenced by the presence of a sherd of modern flowerpot within its fill. The second trench contained no archaeologically significant features, the deposits having been heavily disturbed by a large modern pit that extended across much of the trench. Overall, the evaluation demonstrates a low archaeological potential, with only minor evidence for Romano-British activity and more extensive modern disturbance across the site.
