Description
The site covers an area of c. 0.10 ha of an arable field, located to the west of the A620 west of Saundby, and south of Beckingham. It occupies the west side of the River Trent valley, with the site undulating towards flat land to the east.
Machine stripping of overburden was undertaken by a mechanical excavator fitted with toothless grading bucket under the supervision and control of a qualified archaeologist to the top of the undisturbed natural strata or archaeological deposits, whichever was highest in the stratigraphic sequence. Thereafter cleaning and excavation was conducted by hand.
Excavation of human remains was undertaken following the provision of a Burial Licence issued by the Ministry of Justice (Coroner’s Division) in accordance with Section 25 of the Burial Act 1857. Post-excavation assessment of excavated human remains contains an analysis of the material and a statement for the final deposition of the assemblage.
A 0.1 hectare L-shaped trench uncovered six early medieval burials radiocarbon dated from the 6th to 8th centuries AD, located with a small enclosure, likely associated with a rural settlement.
