Description

A geophysical survey was undertaken to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of a c. 11 ha area of land at Peafield Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. The survey area was located directly east of Mansfield Woodhouse, adjacent to residential housing. Gradiometer survey was undertaken across one field under arable cultivation. The survey area was bordered by a road to the north, arable fields to the east, a footpath and a river to the south, and residential homes to the west. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully completed across the survey area. Method: Magnetic Instrument: Bartington Instruments Grad-13 Digital Three-Axis Gradiometer Traverse Interval: 1m Sample Interval: 200Hz reprojected to 0.125m No anomalies of an archaeological origin have been detected. Anomalies of agricultural, natural and undetermined origin have been identified through magnetometer survey. Modern disturbance was limited to an underground service. Historical agricultural activity has been detected as former mapped field boundaries and linear anomalies oriented north to south identified as agriculture trends, aligning with modern ploughing as shown by cropmarks present in satellite imagery. Natural variations have been detected and were likely related to former waterways or channels associated with the river south of survey area, and material deposited by riverine activity. Anomalies of an undetermined origin were identified, likely related to agricultural activity, but an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out.
