Description

The site is to the east of Rampton village and to the south of Cottam Power Station. It is within a single agricultural field 16.29 ha in size, which is bordered to the north by Torksey Ferry Road and to the east by Nightleys Road. A programme of trial trenching was undertaken, comprising 39no 50m x 1.8m trenches set out as agreed in the WSI or as near as possible as site conditions allowed. The trial trenching exposed archaeological features in 27 of the 39 trenches excavated. The geophysical survey of the site identified two north – south aligned former boundaries, these were identified in the trial trenching and produced modern finds. A third parallel boundary was also recorded to the east. All three correspond to the historic field boundaries shown on the 1885 Ordnance Survey map of the site. A single small sherd of residual Roman pottery was recovered from the ditch in one trench. Further ditches running broadly east – west were recorded in three trenches. These also produced post-medieval to modern finds. They were not apparent on historic maps and may represent broadly contemporary but short-lived components of the same system of land division. The geophysical survey identified numerous north – south aligned anomalies interpreted as agricultural features and this was confirmed by the trial trenching. Furrows were recorded in fifteen trenches. A sample were excavated and one produced a sherd of early 13th to early/mid-14th century pottery, providing a date for the origins of the field system. The rectangular geophysical anomaly towards the southwest corner of the site was targeted by three trenches but no corresponding archaeological features were exposed in any of these trenches. In summary, the evaluation indicates that the potential for significant archaeological remains within the site is very low. The principal features encountered appear to relate 19th-century activity and medieval ridge-and-furrow.
