Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching for the Trent Battery Energy Storage System, Rampton, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning consent for the construction of a battery energy storage system. The site lies within an area of known archaeological activity, with evidence of prehistoric, Roman and medieval activity in the wider area. A geophysical survey of the site recorded two north – south aligned former field boundaries as well as a rectilinear anomaly measuring 43m x 25m towards the southwest corner of the site. Other anomalies were thought to be related to drainage or ploughing. The works comprised 39no 50m x 1.8m trenches, targeted on features identified in the preceding trial trenching. The trenches identified three former north – south aligned field boundaries, all of which are visible on the Ordnance Survey map of 1885. Three trenches recorded east – west aligned ditches that do not appear on historic maps but produced late post-medieval finds. There was also a pond in one of the three trenches that does not appear on any mapping but contained post-medieval and modern finds. Numerous furrows were also recorded, one of which produced a sherd of early 13th to early-to-mid 14th-century pottery. The rectangular feature towards the southwest corner of the site was not seen. In summary, the evaluation indicates that the potential for significant archaeological remains within the site is very low. The principal features encountered appear to relate 19th-century activity and medieval ridge-and-furrow.
