Description

Each year English Heritage undertake a programme of aerial reconnaissance covering the whole of England. The reconnaissance is undertaken by two Aerial Survey teams based in the Swindon and York offices. The York office staff cover the northern counties (Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham, Tyne and Wear, Cleveland, North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire). The photographs resulting from this reconnaissance are available through the NMR Enquiry and Research Services section. Also, new archaeological information is entered into the NMR monument database. For further information on the northern aerial reconnaissance programme contact Dave MacLeod, EH York (01904 601943).For the financial year 2005/6 the northern reconaissance programme made 44 flights (a total of 127.2 flight hours) and photographed 701 targets. Further details are given below:-In the first quarter of the year (03/04/05 to 01/07/05) England¿s Landscapes targets for the North West and East Midlands volumes were undertaken. A good start was also made to the cropmark season with some very good results on the Trent gravels south of Newark. Also, a vertical sortie was carried out over Fylingdales Moor (N Yorks), using the set up in our usual aircraft. The results look good but coverage was incomplete due to a technical fault. In the second quarter (04/07/05 to 02/10/05) poor conditions resulted in only 8 flightsbeing undertaken, with none in August at all. Photography for the England's landscapes volumes was the priority, with particularly good flights to Derbyshire and Cumbria in September. In the third quarter (02/10/05 to 31/12/05) seven flights were undertaken again targetting England's Landscape sites, but also photographing earthworks and scheduled monuments in North Yorkshire and Derbyshire. A flight was also undertaken to photograph the excavation of Neolithic longhouses at Milfield in Northumberland. In the fourth quarter (01/01/06 to 31/03/06) seven flights were done and included a flight to Sheffield to photograph sites in the city centre, another focussing on architectural targets in Nottingham and two helicopter flights to take stills and video footage along Hadrian's Wall.
