Full Description
A medieval pit … cut from within the subsoil, roughly circular, about 4.8 x 2m in plan and 0.85m deep where sectioned against the baulk. Six sherds of medieval C15 - C16 pottery came from the upper layer and another five sherds of similar pottery from the next layer with one fragment of animal bone. (1)
Such a late dating of the pottery seems incorrect given the date ranges of Nottingham green glazed wares, coarse sandy wares and even late Notts glazed wares do not extend past C15. (2)
See L11478 for flint from the fill, L11479 for modern features, M3059 for medieval manor and fishpond earthworks c 50m W.
NB the number of sherds mentioned in appendix C does not tally with the number reported in the text.
