Full Description

In gully connection pit 33, a metalled surface at a depth of 130cm. This consisted predominantly of limestone fragments, with some pebbles. In a thin silt layer immediately above, a very small pot sherd tentatively identified as Cistercian Ware was found. The metalled surface may belong to a road that lead to Newark Castle gatehouse. (1)
