Description

An archaeological watching brief took place in the Castlegate - lower Northgate area of Newark to watch roadworks and excavations arising from the de-trunking of a length of the A46 through the town. The alterations entailed re-surfacing the road and the digging of trenches and gullies for altered kerblines, along with the replacement of drainage and sewer connections, the planting of trees, for which pits had to be dug. Work was carried out along the length of Castlegate, Beastmarket Hill and Bargate, and the lower part of Northgate. (1) Grid ref at SW end of area investigated See E9112 for earlier watching brief
