Full Description

Water main watching brief - Church Road. There was evidence of quantities of broken bricks being used, apparently at one time, to level and raise the road: that activity must be later than C17 and the inclusion of C19 material suggests that it could have been quite late. One fragment of medieval (C14-C15) pottery was found 0.4m down from the road surface in this layer (by Emmadale) but together with three C19 sherds. The gravel road metalling layer found in most parts of the village shows that the present street pattern is not greatly different from that in the late P Med period. (1)
