Full Description

Watching brief on water main. The only find of significance was a sharpened wooded stake of approximately circular section, stratified within dark grey alluvium at the base of the trench. The object was broken at one end, and was 46cm long by c 35mm in diameter (with 13 rings). The sharpened end was cut obliquely by two axe cuts. Hawthorn or apple. It is of uncertain date and function, but could represent part of a riverine structure - such as a training weir or fishweir. (1)
