Full Description

Steetley Cave was discovered in 1976 during construction work at the brickworks. It is highly likely that the cave development continues for some distance into the limestone. Excavations produced bone fragments from species including lynx, wildcat, fox, badger and many frogs. A single scalene triangle flint of Mes type was found near the roof of the cave - probably lodged within one of the animals that died within the cave rear. The cave was probably never occupied by humans (too small). (1)
Two ground probing radar surveys indicating a larger cave system. Trial trench recovered well-preserved animal bone and lime pollen. (2)
A small number of flint artefacts have been recovered from the site. These may or may not be of the same age. The reported patination states appear to be quite varied. The sedimentary setting and the restricted space within the cave make it unlikely that any of this material is in a primary context. (3)
Grid ref for original cave exposure. See L11727 for Steetley Quarry Cave.
