Full Description

Topographic survey of earthwork surrounding Tiln Holt, 12m - 5.6m across the ditch and bank(s), which occur in varying combination in different stretches of the circuit - the ditch is the most marked and consistent feature, the inner bank is slight, the outer ditch largest to the south. An internal 'corner mound' is evident only at the SE. Possibly a woodbank, though it appears the ditch may have been the main feature, and primarily for drainage purposes. Two trenches were excavated across the perimeter earthwork. In trench 66, the full width and depth of the ditch were not revealed. No artefacts from either excavation. Within the Holt, two blocks of ridge and furrow, both earlier than the perimeter earthwork. A mound, c.15m diameter, up to 0.8m in height. A curious arc of ditch, 30m long and 0.4m deep. A bifurcating ditch some 30m in length and 0.2m deep, crossed by the W side of the perimeter earthwork. (1)
