Full Description

A Ro well found while blasting clay in MJ Baldwin and Co's brickyard. It was 40ft deep, 3ft 6in wide, choked with blue clay and bones, and stone lined for the first 12ft. Before a close examination could be made the majority was removed, leaving only the lower 12ft intact. This had a 2ft 6in deep cement like filling forming a basal plug. Finds from the well included pottery: black burnished, mortaria, grey wares c 250-300 AD. Bones: horse, sheep, goat, pig, dog, mice, and a leather shoe sole, wooden stakes, mollusc shells, wood lice and seeds, 2 frags millstone grit querns, a roof shingle. (1) (2)
