Full Description

The church at Broughton Sulney, dedicated, according to pre-Reformation wills preserved at York, to St Oswald, comprises nave, N aisle, S porch, chancel and W tower. (1)
In the porch a fragmentary Norman tympanum with vertical stripes, vertical rows of diapers, and a very crude figure in the right corner. The church originally had two aisles. The S aisle was pulled down when the porch was built (in 1733). Of the S arcade only one bay survives, built into the wall. Transitional, c.1200. The N arcade is later still, but also C13. N aisle and chancel rebuilt in 1855 by SS Teulon. (2)
