Full Description
Ruddington Framework knitters' shops. The Chapel Street complex consists of 2 framework knitters' shops with the hosier's cottage and store all on one site, a now unique assemblage of buildings. Ruddington doubled in size in the first half of the C19 as a result of framework knitting. There are still a number of framework knitting shops with their distinctive long windows indicating their origin, but the Chapel Street group is the only surviving example of a complete collection of buildings together on one site. (1)
c.1820. Knitters' windows still in place, as are some bolts used to hold stockinger's machinery in place. One shop in very good condition, one structurally poor. Cottages in need of modernisation (21/01/1969). (2)
