Full Description
A preservation fund has been established to purchase and restore the Chapel Street complex consisting of two framework knitters' shops with the hosier's cottage and store all on the one site, a now unique assemblage of buildings. Ruddington in Nottinghamshire doubled in size in the first half of the nineteenth century as a result of the growth of framework knitting. There are still a number of framework knitting shops with their distinctive long windows indicating their origin, but the Chapel Street group is the only surviving example of a complete collection of buildings together on one site. The objects of the project are to purchase the property (a price has been agreed with the owner), restore the cottages and one frame shop, decorate one section as a replica stockingers' cottage room, and install in the remaining space machinery, written and fabricated evidence, illustrating the development of the industry from earliest times. Ultimately it is intended to restore and use the remaining buildings. (1)
c.1820. Knitters' windows still in place, as are some bolts used to hold stockinger's machinery in place. One shop in very good condition, one structurally poor. Cottages in need of modernisation (21/01/1969). (2)
