Framework knitters' workshop and attached outbuildings, now museum. c.1840, the workshop replacing a smaller workshop of c.1829. (1)

Two two-storey workshops purpose-built in 1829, rebuilt c.1860 face each other across a yard. (2)

A preservation fund has been established to purchase and restore the Chapel Street complex consisting of two framework knitters' shops with the hosier's cottage and store all on the one site, a now unique assemblage of buildings. Ruddington in Nottinghamshire doubled in size in the first half of the nineteenth century as a result of the growth of framework knitting. There are still a number of framework knitting shops with their distinctive long windows indicating their origin, but the Chapel Street group is the only surviving example of a complete collection of buildings together on one site. The objects of the project are to purchase the property (a price has been agreed with the owner), restore the cottages and one frame shop, decorate one section as a replica stockingers' cottage room, and install in the remaining space machinery, written and fabricated evidence, illustrating the development of the industry from earliest times. Ultimately it is intended to restore and use the remaining buildings. (3)

A former framework knitters' workshop which is now in use as a office/storehouse. It was constructed in the early 19th century from red brick with a slate roof. Extending across the whole front of the first floor is a single casement. At the left hand end of the ground floor there is a single tripartite casement, to the right a single small casement, a single seven light casement, a single five light casement and a single similar small casement. All casements are with glazing bars. In the right gable wall on the first floor is a doorway with a plank door and an overlight. (4)
