Full Description

W tower: one is tempted to suppose mid-C16 origin. Low C14 S arcade. The chancel was built on the foundations of the medieval one, which had fallen down in the C17. By Brewill & Baily, 1894, harsh red brick. (1)
Fragments of 2 Med cross slabs, re-used in the jambs of the E window of the S aisle, were discovered during repair work. One probably of C13. They have been returned to the E window and are no longer visible. (2)
Fitz Ranulph succeeded his father [in] AD 1166. The inference is that [he] set out to build a church [here]. Originally ... a simple parallelogram with thick unbuttressed walls. [I] think that the S aisle was added very shortly after the church was built. In the latter part of the 14th century … a clerestory [was added] and this involved the rebuilding of the pier arcade. The present tower is built chiefly in brickwork on the old [C14] foundation. The reign of Queen Anne is a likely date [for its construction]. In 1716 the present flat roof was put on … presumably [by] the churchwarden John Deverel. The present S porch [is] a plain brick addition [of] 1794. [In] 1894 a new chancel was built. (3)
