Trent Bridge. Built of stone and cast iron, operational. (1)

Built by the borough engineer, Ogle Tarbotton. Completed in 1871. Its decorative parapet was cast by Handysides of Derby. (2)

After the floods of the 1940s the need for effective flood defences was addressed: the channel of the river was widened in places, near Trent Bridge, in combination with sluices and an embankment scheme. The crossing of the river has always been focussed on the same point. The current Trent Bridge, designed in 1871 by the corporation surveyor, Marriot Ogle Tarbotton, and widened in 1926, represents a continuity from the earliest times; fragments of its stone medieval predecessor are preserved to the south of the present bridge.
