Description

This characterisation report on the city of Nottingham was commissioned by the East Midlands Regional Team to assist them with their regular casework within the city of Nottingham. Includes parts of Rushcliffe and Gedling. The following chapters cover all of the present-day city of Nottingham and the wider urban conurbation which surrounds it, including sections of the boroughs of Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling. The main part of the report, Part 2, examines the four areas of the city each with their own distinctive character which highlight particular aspects of Nottingham's past. These areas are as follows; the City Centre, the Inner Suburbs, the Industrial Strip (the flat flood plain to the south of the city centre dominated by the canal and the railway) and the Outer Suburbs. Preceding these area studies, Part 1 provides a brief survey of the development of Nottingham. It is this historical background that allows us to understand and value what we see, as we walk around the city today.
