Full Description

The demi-columns of the chancel arch [are] C12. The nave is wider now than it was in the C12. The arcades … late C13. The clerestory was added in the C15. Chancel windows renewed in 1877-8 by Evans & Jolly. Plain C15 spire. (1)
The structural evolution of All Saints, Cotgrave, appears almost archetypal for a parish church. It developed from a single or two celled structure of C11 - C12 date, acquring a tower between C11 - C13, aisles in late C13, a new tower and spire at the end of C14, a C15 clerestory and various C19 additions. In addition, a number of significant and informative artefacts were recovered or recorded, including medieval pottery, glazed floor tiles, painted window glass, painted wall plaster, stone grave covers and various roofing materials etc. … The majority of the pottery, though small in quantity, was recovered from secure contexts. Furthermore, these all appeared to corroborate the structural and architectural evidence. (2)
Analysis of the timber samples concluded that they were an ad-hoc collection of timbers which were salvaged and reused as joists in the late C19 when the pews were put in place. The bell-frame timber…does have an early C17 date which may agree with the replacement of bells in the tower at about the same time. Two timbers…are C18 and may belong to a balcony and screen inserted then. The other timbers represent and earlier roof. (3)
