Full Description

Shadow marks of DMV. Streets clear, and 1 or 2 house plots. (1)
In the fields to the E of Bingham known as "Crow Close" are earthworks indicating a former village. No documentary evidence has yet been found to explain whether the village shrunk or migrated to its present site, but from the layout of the present village it is most probably an example of shrinkage and not migration. (3) is probably the first plan of a deserted village to be published. (2)
The street past the church continues straight on E across the site and other sunken roads join it to make a grid pattern of streets and raised house platforms. It is not clear whether the site of Bingham has migrated or just shrunk in one direction. The site is near to the church but the market place is at the other end. (4)
A perambulation of this site showed the earthworks, which are confined to Crow Close, to be shrinkage. (5)
Iron Med key found. (6)
Crow Close is now a pasture field on Cogley Lane at the E end of the present village. The NW corner of the field has been fenced off and is now used as a playing field on which large items of playing equipment have been erected. A number of possible house platforms are visible in the playing field. (7)
At the end of Oct 1988 a hole appeared in the playing field of Carnarvon School, within the SAM. Described by Headmaster as a "well", on inspection no sign of lining found, nor record of well, more likely an unrecorded borehole. Diam 0.45m, depth more than 2m (water and sludge at 1.2m), sides smooth and regular and cut through Keuper marl. Capped late July 1989. (8)
Morph: group: unknown medieval shifted village (229.1.1 unknown medieval toft, 229.1.2 unknown medieval building platform), 229.2.1 unknown medieval hollow way, 229.3.1-3 unknown post medieval enclosures. (9)
