Full Description

The Yorkist attempt to usurp the throne, and replace Henry VII by the pretender Lambert Simnel, was defeated in battle at Stoke Field, 16/06/1487. Yorkists moving from Rotherham to (presumably) Newark engaged the King's army (coming from Newark or Nottm?). The Yorkist army was drawn up in battle array at SK 745490 and therefore the battle must have raged either N or S of this point. (1) (2)
The area of this fluid engagement is now under agricultual cultivation. (3)
Henry moved up from Nottingham - the traditional area of the battle seems correct. (4)
See L1430 for Red Gutter, M8918 for Burrand Bush Stone, M17856, M1680 for burial pits.
