Full Description

"Chappel formerly" (? - on edge of map) shown on west side of road at Gonalston Spital. (1)
Here is a spital or chapel, an ill looking place, … without glass in the windows. (2)
A chantry was founded in the chapel of the Spital by Joanna, daughter of John de Heriz, in 1326. As long as the Spital Church was standing, each rector of Gonalston had to be inducted into it, as well as the parish church. Finally, about 1820, the then rector pulled it down, and made some of the stones into a sham ruin near his own entrance gate (later removed). The present occupier of the cottage at the Spital can recollect a low piece of walling, 9 or 10 yards long, visible above ground in the garden there. (3)
See M1768 for Gonalston Spital, M2001 for well.
