Full Description

Shows two buildings on the east side of the road, named "Gunaldstone Spittal". (1)
Within half a mile of the church, on the road to Southwell, is the site of Gonalston Spital, ie the Hospital of St Mary Magdalene of Broad Busk, founded in the reign of Henry III by William de Heriz… The buildings dwindled down to one cottage adjoining the Spital Church … about 1820, the then rector pulled it down. (2)
The hospital of St Mary Magdalene at "Bradebusk" was founded c 1252 for sick people. It escaped the Dissolution, but the commissioners of 1545-6 reported it as having one priest and no sick. The hospital stood 1/4 mile from Gonalston Church. (3) (4) (5)
Spital is a red brick C19 private residence with no visible remains of an earlier structure. Enquiries of the occupiers were non-productive. (6)
See M1711 for chapel, M2001 for well and M17722 for the modern farmstead.
