Full Description

Almost entirely Perp. The only earlier parts are the C12-C13 W tower … crowned by a C14 top. A two-storeyed structure must have existed against [the N wall of the chancel]. Ralph Cromwell … ordered the rebuilding in a codicil to his will dated ... 1454. In an indenture drawn up between ... 1466 and … 1469 by Ralph's executors, one of the outstanding charges is £300 for building the church. (1) (3)
On the north side of the chancel are the ruins of a small chantry chapel, supposed to have been founded by the sixth Ralph de Cromwell in 1340. [Of] the tower, the three lower stages are Early English. The upper stage was added during the Perpendicular period. The base moulding, being of the Decorated type … is an insertion. The nave and chancel were built during the reign of Henry VI (1422-1461) by Ralph de Cromwell. (2)
Trenches to the north of the nave partially exposed a linear stone foundation running parallel to the existing nave. Dated by pottery to the late C12 to C13 or after, the foundation is most likely to be an earlier phase of church building, possibly a north aisle predating the existing C15 nave. (4)
16 timer samples (8 slices and 8 cores) were obtained in 1991 from the bell frame and associated timbers of the tower at Holy Trinity Church, Lambley. The likely felling date for the tower timbers was 1493 and a tentative date of 1128 was given for the felling of the timbers of the bell frame. (5)
See L10905,6 and 7 for finds and features from the churchyard.
