Full Description
[The] steeple belongs entirely … to the years c.1300-20. The lowest windows [are] c.1300, the bell-openings [and] first tier of dormers … [are] Dec. The nave front … was begun c.1200. The upper stage belongs to the date of the tower. Masonry of c.1200 has also been found in the chancel and N aisle walls. The main visible motifs of the chancel are mid-C13. Arcades of late C13 or early C14 form. The S aisle windows Early Dec, the S porch probably contemporary. (1)
The greater part of the work … is Early English, AD 1230-1280. The remains of a Norman transitional church, c.1190, exist in the W end of the nave, the lower part of the N aisle wall, a small window up near the tower arch, and in the chancel walls from the foundation to the window cills. The tower and spire … are Decorated work, say about 1320. The nave roof, clerestory and porch are early 15th century. [Restoration] work carried out in 1871 [by the] Rev. Orlando W. Forester. (2)
Roughly dressed stone foundations for the N tower arch pier. The foundations for the S pier were of a similar nature. The tower wall foundations were of horizontally-coursed dressed masonry throughout, with a very slight offset. … All the graves identified appeared to respect and therefore post-date the tower walls. The tower foundations were internally trench-built except for part of the W wall, which was founded on bedrock. This suggests that the site was not fully levelled in advance of construction. The plain green glazed medieval floor tile indicated the character of an early floor surface, perhaps around the altar; the glazed ridge tile gave further evidence of medieval decorative details. The watching brief N of the tower suggested a low incidence of burials in this area. (3)
See M18307 for lead working site in the tower.
