Full Description

Tower area: three substantial niches roughly hewn into the masonry, each was roughly arch shaped in elevation and recessed in the form of a curving fireback, which sooting indicated as their function. In the NE angle, a sub floor residue of black ashy earth contained a substantial bowl shaped lump of fused lead, lying inverted. From the burnt earth were retrieved lead dross, a piece of coal … and several post medieval potsherds. … The niche in the NE angle was interpreted as provision for a coal fired lead melting furnace, presumably for repairs to the roof or windows. Its operation was assigned within the period 1793 - 1842 by dated graffiti, a conclusion broadly borne out by the associated pottery. The other two niches may also have been formed for industrial processes. (1)
