Full Description

The tower was raised to its present height in 1320, its lower part being all that is left of the simple church built at the close of Norman days. The nave and N aisle are C14 and the aisle windows and clerestory are C15. The S aisle and transepts are C19. The church has connections with the Byron family, Lord Byron the poet is buried here. (1)
The W tower clearly exhibits its C12-C13 work. The top stage is C14. The N arcade was originally C13. The front of the S porch is … C14 timber. S aisle added in 1872-4 by Evans & Jolly, the two unusually long transepts in 1887-8 by R. C. Clarke. 25 stained glass windows by Kempe, of his best, early period … mostly 1888-95. (2)
Alleged date of c.790 AD for lower phase of tower - dubious. (3)
The three lower storeys of the tower … date from 1180. 1320 [saw] the addition of a chancel, porch, belfry and a N aisle … terminating eastwards in a chapel. About 1475 Perpendicular lights replaced the Decorated lights in the N aisle. In 1871-2 … a S aisle was added. In 1887-8 … the chancel [was moved] 24 feet eastward, the gap being filled by transepts. A clerestory [was] added. (4)
