Full Description

Small unbuttressed W steeple of the C13 with a later spire, probably late C14. The church was rebuilt in 1842 with old stone for chancel and clerestory. Font: C15. (1)
Previous conclusions that Cossall church was 're-built, save tower and spire in 1842 - 43' are clearly incorrect and misleading. On closer inspection the existing chancel arch and S arcade would appear to comprise medieval elements. The watching brief revealed the survival below ground of further medieval remains including the truncated nave foundations, possible floor deposits, burials and several miscellaneous features (including a probable path to a former nave N door). The present rebuilt S aisle was found to lie largely on the possible foundations of its medieval precursor, while moulded stones from the earlier fabric were exposed within the foundations of the N aisle and arcade constructed in 1842.
