Full Description

Kimberley Station (Midland Railway). (1)

About [1875], the Midland Railway commenced a line from Basford Junction to Ilkeston Junction. The passenger service was withdrawn in 1917 [and] the line was closed to all traffic [in] 1950. The buildings which formed the Goods Station and Passenger Station are now the property of the Kimberley Breweries. (2)

Small Victorian station of red brick with terracotta dressings. Extended. Derelict and currently without a roof covering. (3)

The water mill was at the side of the Green Brook. This was at a place now occupied by the Old Midland Railway Station…The mill went under the name of Lindley's Mill... In 1845 the mill house was converted into two houses. These were demolished (c.1865) to make way for the railway. (2)

Tithe map shows a range of buildings perpendicular to the brook at the approximate location of the Station. (4)

The railway station was assessed for listing in 1991 and 1998 and was considered to not be of listable quality. The adviser wrote in 1998 that "Despite being a largely complete station building and house of the Great Northern Railway dating from 1874, it was sparsely designed and very economically built." Further to this, they felt that "It dates from the period of network consolidation when the railways were not doing anything particularly new and it is not an especially interesting or well preserved example of its period."
The station building is single storey, constructed of red brick, with black brick detailing. The windows are currently boarded up and the roof covering appears to have gone. The building has a tall chimney, and internally there are cast iron braces and wooden panelling. The applicant asserts that the Old Midland Railway Station at Kimberley was built in 1879, and was designed by Charles Trubshaw, who was architect for the Midland Railway from 1878. Trubshaw designed the Midland Hotel in Manchester, listed at Grade II*, and Leicester Midland Station and Sheffield Station, both listed at Grade II. The line which Kimberley station served closed to passengers in 1917, and the building was in use as a club at some point in its recent history.
The exterior of the Old Midland Station at Kimberley is relatively plain apart from some floral terracotta mouldings, and comes late in the period of the Victorian railway expansion. The interior cast iron braces and wooden panelling show how the station once was, but the building has undergone alteration due to its alternative use and it appears that breeze blocks have been inserted, windows replaced and the roof covering lost. The building does not reach the level of special architectural and historic interest in a national context required to merit listing. (5)

It was closed to passenger traffic in 1917 but remained open for goods until 1 January 1951 with the track being lifted in 1956. The station house was subsequently used by Kimberley ex-Servicemen's Club and then Kimberley Social Club but is currently derelict. (6)
